Creature MARK
Objective:
To break down form, color, and composition to better grasp mark-making through a conceptual, geometric depiction of an Angel Fish to showcase features that best encapsulate it.
Research Methodology
I began by understanding what physical and behavioral traits my creature exuded to best capture its essence even through translation. I learned how majestic and elegant this creature was through its translucent yet decorative fins almost resembling "angel wings". I studied other manufactured adaptations of the creature to see what attributes were highlighted and moved forward to apply that through form.
Physical + Digital Sketches
On a basic level the form consists of two triangles turned 90 degrees; one larger than the other, both isosceles, facing the same direction. As you begin to apply the fins you see they consist of overlapping circles. While the mark may consist of all of the same shapes the creature itself has these complexities only strategy could recover. Hence the negative space where the Angel Fish's fins begin to thin out.
Iteration Refinements
Finalized Mark
A study of mark form to the completed: The angel fish's overall elegance, thin ventral, dorsal, caudal, and anal fins and cheeky gaze become the defining attributes while still allowing the form to remain recognizable
FINAL FORM WITH APPLIED CONTEXT, COLOR, AND SHAPE
The creature is applied to an illustrated scene along with a short poetic phrase, one that elevates the message conveyed in the mark.
A mirror of the heavens
They swish and dip
A celestial wish,
The angelfish
Color Iterations + Compositions
The effect I was seeking was to place the fish in its typical underwater setting but add stars and a dark background to appear as a night sky, one where a celestial/ angelic creature would reside.
